Installation of Danfoss Icon 2 Hybrid Manifold
Project story
Ready for more energy-efficient operation
At Optiklimaat we optimised the existing heating installation in a two-storey home by replacing the old high-temperature manifolds with a hybrid manifold. This improved comfort in the home and the installation is now ready for more energy-efficient operation.
Former situation
The home was heated with two high-temperature manifolds, one per floor. Each manifold had Danfoss Icon control, operating on the master-slave principle. Although the system worked, the manifolds were limited in flexibility and energy efficiency, and achieving even heat distribution across the rooms was a challenge.
Challenges
Several challenges arose during the replacement:
- The existing pipes under the manifolds had to be reconnected and adapted for the new hybrid manifolds.
- The system had to be correctly balanced hydronically to ensure even heat transfer in all rooms.
Approach and new installation
To make the installation work optimally, we:
- The existing underfloor heating layout plan was used to accurately map how the circuits run, including centre-to-centre spacing and the length of each loop.
- The new hybrid manifold installed, combined with Danfoss Icon 2 balancing with wireless thermostats per room or circuit.
- The system hydronically balanced so all rooms receive even heat output
Operation of the hybrid manifold
The hybrid manifold intelligently regulates the flow and return of hot water to the underfloor heating. At low temperatures it does not mix flow and return, so the system continues to work efficiently. Only when the supply temperature exceeds 45°C is mixing applied. This is a safety measure to protect the screed from excessive temperatures.
Result
The home now has a modern, flexible and energy-efficient heating system:
- Heat is evenly distributed across all rooms,
- Each room can be controlled individually via wireless thermostats,
- The system works efficiently at low temperatures and protects the floor at higher temperatures,
- The installation is future-proof and easy to adapt for changes or extensions.
Thanks to this upgrade, living comfort has been significantly increased and the home is ready for an efficient and safe heating system that saves energy without sacrificing ease of use
